Buy The Historian's Wizard of Oz

The Historian's Wizard of Oz synthesizes four decades of scholarly interpretations of L. Frank Baum's classic children's novel as an allegory of the Gilded Age political economy and a comment on the gold standard. The heart of the book is an annotated version of The Wizard of Oz that highlights the possible political and monetary symbolism in the book by relating characters, settings, and incidents in it to the historical events and figures of the 1890s, the decade in which Baum wrote his story. Dighe simultaneously values the leading political interpretations of Oz as useful and creative teaching tools, and consolidates them in a sympathetic fashion; yet he rejects the commonly held, and by now well-debunked, view that those interpretations reflect Baum's likely motivations in writing the book. The result is a unique way for readers to acquaint themselves with a classic of children's literature that is a bit different and darker than the better-known film version.

Windows on Learning

Now more than ever, there is expanded interest in and deeper appreciation of the documentation of children's work as seen in the growing influence of the Reggio Emilia Approach, authentic assessment, and other alternative ways of judging children's academic achievement. In this first book to actually explain the mechanics of documentation, the authors show how documentation (which includes narratives, photos, drawings, videotapes and captions) allows children, teachers, and parents to learn more from each school project. Renowned educator Lilian G. Katz provides a foreword to the volume. The text is heavily illustrated with many examples of children's work documentations.

What began as a quiet farming area in the late 1700s developed into a commerce center of furniture and sewing factories by the late 1800s. Today, its central business area, now on the National Register of Historic Places, is the antique hub of... childrens wicker furniture Children's bookshelves Around Shrewsbury childrens wicker furniture Children's bookshelves Around Shrewsbury
